Caramor didn't have any storage space at the back of the cockpit. As she is tiller steered this was unusable for anything else anyway. After contacting the Rustler owners site and getting a lot of useful ideas and advice I decided to build one myself. The result is not only useful but adds to her looks and provides useful seating when not underway.
Caption: Before, wasted space under the tiller.
Caption: After, Caramor's new Stern locker or 'Lazarette'.
The first stage was to fit a bulkhead. This was made with marine ply which was fitted using a combination of screws, epoxy resin and glass fibre cloth. All the wood was then sealed with epoxy resin.
The joins were carefully filled with an epoxy filler/bonding mix.
Next pieces of hardwood were epoxied and screwed to provide support on all the sides.
A piece of hardwood was then fixed with a suitable gap above the stern support which the lid will slide into.
The remaining 3 sides are held down by the (expensive) but very effective catches.
I left the pump in place and provided a small hatch.
Templates were made and sent to Howells who provided the teak and special glue with which to fix it to the marine ply.
Finally the front of the locker was painted white.
We find that the space is very useful and the lazarette also provides useful seating.
More information about Caramor and the work we have done on her will follow.
